THE Turf Club’s referrals committee will meet on Monday morning to review the controversial performance of The Real Article at Tipperary eight days ago when the Edward O’Grady-trained six-year-old was beaten a short head by Captain Cee Bee in the Grade 3 Grimes Hurdle at Tipperary.
The Real Article only just failed to get up under a hands-and-heels ride from Paddy Mangan and the acting stewards accepted the explanations offered by trainer and rider after calling an inquiry into the riding of the horse from the second-last hurdle.
Made favourite for the Guinness Galway Hurdle on Thursday on the strength of his performance, The Real Article will be 18lb well-in for the race having been raised that amount in future.
Denis Egan, chief executive of the Turf Club, said on Sunday: “The referrals committee will be reviewing the whole race and the decision of the Tipperary stewards not to impose a sanction.”
It is understood that the options facing the committee are: to agree with the Tipperary stewards findings, or to disagree and find that the rules were breached, with the option of imposing a penalty.
Should any penalty be imposed it will be open to appeal and it is understood that every effort will be made to hear it in advance of the Galway Hurdle on Thursday.
