Paul Nicholls is undoubtedly one of the most successful National Hunt trainers of his generation but there’s a few prizes that still elude him. Alongside the Grand National and the Stan James Champions Hurdle, Nicholls identifies the Paddy Power Gold Cup as a major prize he is still yet to get his hands on. This year, his hopes are with favourite Mon Parrain (7/2 to win the PP Gold Cup).
Mon Parrain is young and well-handicapped carrying 10-8 which looks good against second favourite Wishful Thinking carrying 11-6 (6/1 to win the PP Gold Cup). Mon Parrain has headed the betting for this race since the ante-post books opened and it doesn’t look set to change on race day. Only one favourite in the last five years has won this race though so a trend will have to be bucked if Nicholls is to triumph but the trainer is confident ahead of the race.
“He’s in good order. I took him to Exeter last week for a gallop as everybody knows and I’m very happy with him. He hasn’t had a breathing operation. He’s never had any issues with his breathing. You would have thought this is his trip. He won very well at Sandown over three miles bit I think he’d have won that day over any trip, he was that well handicapped.”
