Bodog became the latest online gaming site to leave the American market, announcing Tuesday that it will not renew its current license which expires at the end of this year. The decision was made after Bodog received a license from the UK Gamblingmission, allowing the site to continue operations outside the scope of the increasingly restrictive U.S. market. A statement from Bodog said U.S. residents will no longer be able to access any of thepany’s foreign sites once Morris Mohawk Gaming Group – Bodog’s parentpany – lets the license expire on Dec. 31. “In order to ensure the brand’s expansion is not affected by negative perceptions, both in the UK and elsewhere in emerging markets such as Asia where Bodog88 is already successful, a decision has been made to withdraw the Bodog brand from the US market at the end of 2011,” the statement said. The statement also said Morris Mohawk Gaming plans a 2012 launch under its own brand. It has overseen the Bodog brand for the last five years. Bodog offered online poker alongside wagering on sports and horse races. The dissolution of Bodog’s stateside outletes just days after a similar decision by online wagering site TheGreek, whose properties include BetJamaica and PokerWorld. Bookmaker also moved its American operation. The moves are designed to remain out of the reach of the U.S. Department of Justice, which has cracked down on national online betting this year through the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. In April, the FBI shuttered the domains and seized the accounts of online poker sites PokerStars, FullTiltPoker and AbsolutePoker, leaving many players unable to collect their winnings. In May, another government sweep closed a handful of sites, including betED.
