Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand has hailed the arrival of Ashley Young at the Old Trafford club (7/4f to win the 2011/12 Premier League) by complimenting the winger’s desire.
The England international has joined United for a fee reportedly in the region of £16million and is Sir Alex Ferguson’s second summer signing – having acquired the services of Blackburn’s Phil Jones for £16.5million.
Young’s international team-mate Ferdinand posted a message on his Twitter account.
He said: “Welcoming Ashley Young to Manchester United. Another top, hungry and young player joins the ranks.”
The 25-year-old wide-man had been a target for Liverpool, but after passing a medical on Wednesday signed a fice-year deal with the current England champions to snub the Anfield club who are 11/1 to win the 2011/12 Premier League.
It was the second time in as many signings that United have upstaged their bitter rivals, with Jones also being heavily linked with a move to Merseyside before joining the Old Trafford club.
A statement on the Red Devils’ official website read: “Manchester United is delighted to announce it has reached agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of Ashley Young.
“The player passed a medical in Manchester this week and has agreed a five-year contract.”
