THE Pat Cosgrave-ridden Mediplomat was an unlucky second behind the German-bred Ostinato (Sandor Kovacs/Nino Murru) in the 89th Magyar Derby at Budapest on Sunday.
Mediplomat, a son of Medicean, was sent off favourite for the HUF12 million (approx. £41,000) event.
Cosgrave sent him to the front two furlongs out as early leader Obuda faded but the latter’s stable companion Ostinato came with a determined run down the outside under Italian rider Nino Murru.
Despite appearing to bump Mediplomat, causing interference to both Lenz and Exlibris, he kept the race in a photo finish from Cosgrave’s mount with Czech raider Wallisto back in third.
The other British based jockey in the race, AhmedAjtebi, finished down the field on the Slovak-trained Pacino Mo.
