Sky Sports commentator Michael Holding believes Zaheer Khan’s absence leaves England “streets ahead” of India ahead of the second Test at Trent Bridge starting tomorrow (2/9 England in Series Outright, Draw 4/1, India 10/1).

The former West Indies fast bowler, who claimed 249 Test wickets at 23.68 apiece, is not convinced by the depth India possess in their bowling department after seeing MS Dhoni’s side beaten by 196 runs at Lord’s after the early loss of Zaheer to a hamstring strain.

“I don’t think you need me to tell you that India’s weakest department is their bowling and that’s where England have the upper hand. Under English conditions, England have a better bowling attack and (against India) without Zaheer, England are streets ahead,” he told India’s DNA (6/4 Jimmy Anderson in Top England Series Bowler).

“It was obvious that without Zaheer, India’s bowling was very much exposed at Lord’s.”

Holding says India would find it difficult to bounce back if they fail to field a fully-fit Zaheer later in the series as Shanthakumaran Sreesanth battles for his spot at Trent Bridge.

“It will be difficult for India to get back into this series if Zaheer is unavailable or not at full fitness,” he said.

India hope Zaheer might make it back for the third Test match at Edgbaston later this month and took it easy with the left-arm seamer at practice this week, only putting him through a light exercise drill under the watchful eyes of physio Ashish Kaushik.
