Jamie Carragher claims the fear of being “absolutely slaughtered” by the media affects England’s players going into big games, particularly at World Cup or European Championship tournaments (England 8/1 – Euro 2012 Winner).
The veteran 33-year-old Liverpool central defender was part of Fabio Capello’s squad at last year’s World Cup finals in South Africa in which the Three Lions scraped through the group stages before being thrashed 4-1 by Germany in the second round.
And as England’s bid to qualify for next summer’s Euro 2012 (1/7 – Group G Qualification Group Winners) in Poland and Ukraine has stuttered of late following a 2-2 draw with Switzerland at Wembley, Carragher has highlighted how the fear of making a costly mistake definitely hinders players’ performances.
“One mistake and you could be absolutely slaughtered,” he told BBC Radio 5 live. “At your club, you know you will not be criticised as much and perhaps three days later there will be another game.
“With England, it could be months before you have another fixture. There is a fear at times when playing for England.”
Carragher added: “The intensity of the press does get to the players. Sometimes I think players would prefer the press guy to think they had played well, rather than the manager.”
